Darlene Mae Christiansen, 82, of Mapleton, formerly of Ute, passed away Thursday, July 13, at the Burgess Memorial Hospital of Onawa.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m., Monday, July 17, at the Armstrong-Van Houten Funeral Homes of Ute.

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 18, at the Armstrong-Van Houten Funeral Home of Ute.

Officiating: Pastor Kirk Manchester.

Committal Services: St. Clair Township Cemetery of Ute, following the Funeral Service.

Darlene Mae (Hopkins) Christiansen, the daughter of Clarence and Ellen (Hayes) Hopkins, was born on April 1, 1935, on a farm near Mapleton, and was an only child. She grew up in Ute and graduated from Ute High School with the Class of 1954.

Darlene and Henry L. Christiansen, Jr. were united in marriage on Aug. 21, 1955, in Ute. The couple lived in Mapleton for a time, but resided at Ute most of their married life. Darlene and Hank were blessed with three sons, Henry L. III, Allan R., and Lorne D.

Darlene worked in Omaha, Neb., for about a year before she married Hank. She then worked in Sioux City and at Westendorf’s in Onawa. Darlene was employed at Maple Heights Nursing Home for 19 years.

Darlene was a faithful member of the Ute United Methodist Church. She enjoyed baking, cooking, gardening, and sewing. Darlene also enjoyed playing cards/games and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Darlene moved to Maple Heights Nursing Home Nov. 1, 2013, due to health issues.

Those left to treasure her memories are her sons, Henry lll (Denise) Christiansen of Jefferson, Allan (Christine) Christiansen of Ute, and Lorne (Brenda) Christiansen of Ute; five grandchildren, Brittany Christiansen of Mapleton, Ashley (John) Cooke of Jefferson, Andrew Christiansen, Ashton Christiansen (fiancé Jeremy Peterson of Alta), and Aric Christiansen, all of Ute; great-grandchildren, Brenner Jung of Mapleton and Claire Cooke and Madison Cooke of Jefferson; extended family and friends.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Ellen Hopkins; husband, Henry “Hank” Christiansen; and granddaughter, Amanda Christiansen.

The Armstrong - Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
