Jane Elizabeth Wyatt Adams

Jane Elizabeth Wyatt, youngest daughter of James and Martha Wyatt, was born in Venna, Wisconsin, April 27, 1855 and died at her home near Moorhead, Iowa, February 29 1940 about 10:30 A.M. at the age of 84 years, 10 months and 2 days. She had nine brothers and sisters who preceded her in death.

She, with her mother and father, came to this state the year 1872 and made their home at Woodbine, Iowa. Later moving to the farm now owned by Herman Lewis. On October 24, 1881 at Missouri Valley, Iowa, she was united in marriage to Reuben Adams. They lived on a farm near Logan, later moving to the farm where she passed away, having resided there 44 years.

She and her husband were baptized into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, May 22, 1897, by J.W. Wight at Moorhead, Iowa.

She was the most aged member on the records of the Moorhead church. Owing to her affliction she was unable to attend church regularly, but was a faithful member to the end. On January 11, 1911, she fell and broke her hip, which left her a cripple the remainder of her life.

She with her husband were early settlers in this community. They were always interested in the life of the people about them, and Aunt Jane, as she was called by everyone although going around on her crutches, was always ready to help with the sick.

Her husband, Reuben Adams, passed away March 23, 1930. The sorrowing relatives who remain to mourn her loss are Irvin Adams, Ruby Brown and husband, Barney Brown and one grandson, Edwin Brown all of Moorhead, a step-daughter, Della Smith of Chicago, a step-son, Fred Adams of Rigby, Idaho and a host of relatives and friends.

Since Irvin had recently met with a serious accident and is bedfast with a fractured leg, no service were held at the church but were conducted in the home Sunday, March 3 by Arnold Adams assisted by Blair Richardson. The music was furnished by Mrs. John Ballantyne and Mrs. Walter Johnson, also “The Old Rugged Cross” was sung by LaDonna Baker and Elaine Churchhill of Ute, this was a request of Aunt Jane’s.

Pallbearers were E.L. Taylor, Wesley DeLance, Oscar Piper, Weston Taylor, Roy Baker and Hilman Olson.

The body was placed by the side of her husband in the Spring Valley Cemetery.

“I cannot say and I will not say
That she is dead, she is just away,
With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand,
She has wandered far into a distant land,
And she has left us dreaming how wonderous fair
It needs must be since she lingers there.”
