WHITING, Iowa -- Michael J. "Mick" Sawyer, 64, of Whiting passed away Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Whiting Christian Church, with the Rev. Rusty Hedger officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Michael was born Jan. 22, 1941, in Sioux City, the son of Norman and Goldie (Crouch) Sawyer. He attended East High School and joined the U.S. Navy in 1959. He served on the USS Salisbury, which traveled to Hong Kong, Okinawa and Singapore. After his discharge, he lived in California until 1970.

From 1970 to 1983, he resided in Omaha, where he and his brother, Tom, owned Sawyer Safety Service Barricade Co. In 1985, he returned to Sioux City, where he was in car sales with Team Ford. He later became a black jack pit boss at Casino Omaha in Onawa. In 2000, he retired due to a disability and since has resided in Whiting.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. 615 of Sioux City.

Survivors include his wife, Joan of Whiting; two sons, Michael J. Sawyer Jr. and his wife, Maggie of Chico, Calif., and John Sawyer of Omaha; two daughters, Becky Ancona of Birmingham, Ala., and Therese Phelps of Merced, Calif.; a brother, David Sawyer of Lincoln, Neb.; two sisters and their husbands, Kay and Chancy Dean of Citrus Heights, Calif., and Pam and Steve Moore of Everett, Wash.; three stepchildren, Bryan Kron and his wife, Vicki of Whiting, Brenda Rich of Carroll, Iowa, and Barbi Ethier and her husband, Kirk of Whiting; five grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Tom.
