Onawa, Iowa— Jennie E. McElwain, 99, of Onawa, formerly of Blencoe, died Saturday, October 19, 1996, at the Elmwood Care Center in Onawa.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. today at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Blencoe with the Rev. Earle R. Potts officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, rural Blencoe, under the direction of Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.

Mrs. McElwain was born September 22, 1897, in Sherman Township, Monona County, the daughter of John and Anna (Hodges) Burger. She attended Mobley Country School and the Blencoe Public School. She moved to Blencoe in 1906.

On March 30, 1920, she married Leslie E. McElwain in Onawa. The couple operated the McElwain Grocery Store in Blencoe for 35 years. He died April 17, 1972, in Onawa.

Mrs. McElwain was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ and the Women’s Fellowship of the church. She was an honorary member of the Blencoe American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Memorials have been established in her name with the First Congregational United Church of Christ and the Blencoe Community Center.
