Lawrence L. Uhl passed away Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the residence of his daughter, surrounded by his family. He was 87.

Lawrence was born and raised in Mapleton. He served our country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and returned home to marry Elva June James. In 1952, he moved his young family to the east coast and became an electrical journeyman/lineman. He was a 60-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

He retired to Sparta, N.C., where he became a certified weightmaster and worked for Alleghany County for over 20 years and retired from that position after his 87th birthday.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his first wife, Elva June James and one of their sons, Stephen. He is survived by their six children, Michael (Ann), Katherine (William), Debora (Joseph), Pamela, Anita, and Cynthia.

He was preceded in death by his second wife, Janet Stott; and is survived by their son, Larry. He was preceded in death by his wife, Scarlett Holstein. He is survived by four of his 11 siblings, his brother, Gary, his sisters, Kathryn, Phyllis, and his twin sister, Lucille; and also is survived by 26 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his second wife, Janet Stott; and is survived by their son, Larry.

A memorial service will be held at St. Francis of Rome Catholic Church in Sparta, N.C. at a date convenient to the family.
