Elsie A. Klaus, 102, of Onawa, Iowa, formerly of Mapleton, Iowa, died Saturday, April 1, 2017, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, April 8, 2017, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, Iowa, with Reverend Christopher LaBoube officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Clair Cemetery in Ute. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Friday, April 7, 2017, at the Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, with a prayer service at 6:00 P.M. Visitation will resume 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Elsie Amelia was born on June 7, 1914, in Cherokee, Oklahoma, to Otto and Pauline Hansen. The family moved to Schleswig, Iowa when she was young, and she graduated from Schleswig High School in 1933. She graduated from nursing school at the Lutheran General Hospital in Sioux City in 1937. She then worked as a nurse for three years until her marriage.

Elsie and Willie Klaus were united in marriage on February 8, 1939, in Ute, Iowa. The couple farmed near Danbury and Ute until 1946, when they moved to a farm near Bronson. They moved to Mapleton in November of 1973. Willie passed away on July 2, 1996, and Elsie later moved to Onawa.

She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Lawton for 27 years until moving to Mapleton, when she became a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. She served as a church organist, taught Sunday School for many years, and belonged to the Ladies Aid in Mapleton. She enjoyed quilting and gardening.

Survivors include two sons, William (Hazel) Klaus of Ute, IA and Vernon Klaus of Longmont, CO; four grandchildren, Warren Klaus of Sioux City, IA, Angela Klaus of Sioux City, IA, Jodie (Allen) Schoemaker of Omaha, NE, and Paula (Reeves) Little of Seattle, WA; two great-grandchildren, Beth Klaus and Jacob Schoemaker; and two great-great-grandchildren, Bradley and Emma.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Pauline Hansen; husband, Willie Klaus; twin brother, Irvin (Maxine) Hansen; brother, Otto (Pauline) Hansen; and sister, Myrtle (Elmer) Gosch.
