3 March 2017Robert "Bob" J. Smith, 68, of Whiting, Iowa died unexpectedly, Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.
Per Bob's wishes, cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at a later date with burial in Union State Line Cemetery, Petersburg, Minnesota. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.Robert John was born August 3, 1948 in Windom, Minnesota the son of Verland and Wilma (Swanson) Smith. He grew up in the Lake Field, Minnesota and Spencer, Iowa areas and graduated from Spencer High School in 1966. He served in the Iowa Army National Guard until his honorable discharge.
Bob was united in marriage to Kathryn "Katy" Poynter in February 1970. For several years Bob and Katy made their home in Windom, Minnesota and Spirit Lake, Iowa. They were blessed with two beautiful daughters Stephanie Raquel Wieck of Marengo, Iowa and Bobbi Jo Kay Wright of Correctionville, Iowa. Katy passed away on June 4, 2014 after 44 years of marriage.
Bob was a very talented wood craftsman and worked various craftsman jobs over the years. He enjoyed spending time in his workshop along with spending time with his family, especially his kids and grandkids. He also enjoyed camping, hunting, ice fishing, and was an avid NASCAR and World of Outlaws racing fan.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn "Katy" Smith; parents, Verland and Wilma (Swanson) Smith; and parents-in-law, Lucille and Paul Poynter.
Those left to cherish his memory are his two daughters and their husbands Stephanie and Martin Wieck, their children Parker (16) and Paige (13) all of Marengo, Iowa; Bobbi Jo and Wray Wright and their children Ashley (18) and Wray (5) all of Correctionville, Iowa; and all of Katy's loving family.
