27 March 2017WHITING, Iowa | Mary M. Smith, 89, of Whiting, passed away Friday, March 24, 2017, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Congregational Church, U.C.C. in Whiting, with the Rev. Sharon Cates officiating. Burial will be in Whiting City Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.
Mary Maxine was born in Moville, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Addie (Onstot) Molstad. She graduated from Moville High School in 1946. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she obtained her teaching certificate.
Mary and Gilbert G. Smith were united in marriage on Sept. 3, 1955, in Moville. Three children were born to this union, Randall, Catherine and Lisa. Gilbert preceded her in death on Aug. 11, 2011.
Mary taught briefly and continued as a substitute teacher at Whiting Community School for many years. She was also employed at Pleasant View Care Center as a cook for 20 years.
She was active in the community, and was a member of the First Congregational Church, U.C.C in Whiting for over 50 years, the women’s fellowship, served as a 4-H leader, and was a member of the Ashton Township Ladies and Farm Bureau. She was also a board member of the Iowa Commission of Deaf Services.
Survivors include her three children, Randall (Donna) Smith of Pearland, Texas, Catherine (Steven) Yinger of Omaha, and Lisa (Philip) Babcock of Blair, Neb.; one grandson, Nicholas Smith of Pearland, Texas; and a brother, Dr. Irving (Gina) Molstad of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gilbert G. Smith; a granddaughter, Holly Smith; and three brothers, Wayne, Howard and Lloyd Molstad.
