MAPLETON, Iowa | Edna R. Swanger, 87, of Mapleton, passed away Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Maple Heights Nursing Home of Mapleton.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Mapleton. The Rev. Jena Manchester will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Mapleton. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong-Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton.

Edna Ruth Copp was born on July 12, 1929, on the family farm in Carroll County, Iowa, to Roy V. and Jennie (Smith) Copp. Edna was 16 years old when she graduated from Glidden Public High School in 1946. She was 20 years old when she graduated from Iowa State University at Ames, Iowa, with a degree in Secondary Education in Home Economics Science.

At the age of 21, she began her lifelong career of teaching, starting at Mapleton High School teaching Home Economics and her career of home-sewing for family and other people. In 1955, she changed schools and began teaching Chemistry and Home Economics at Ute Public High School in Ute, Iowa.

On Dec. 26, 1954, she married Charles L. "Chuck" Swanger of Danbury, Iowa. In 1958, they moved into their current home and started their family. In 1964, Edna started her 25-year career of substitute teaching mainly at the Maple Valley Community School.

Survivors include her son, John (and Michelle) Swanger and kids, Jessica and Michael, all of Omaha; her daughter, Laura “Laurie” (and Mark) Weber and kids, Beth, Paul and Anne, all of Mapleton; her son, Carl Swanger of Danbury, Iowa; and sisters-in-law, Trudy Wallis of Hacienda Heights, Calif., and Lois Copp of Auburn, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by Chuck Swanger, her husband of 58 years, who passed away on March 23, 2013 (exactly four years ago); her parents, Roy and Jennie Copp; brothers, Howard Copp and Allen Copp; sister-in-law, Mildred Copp; father- and mother-in-law, John L. and Chattie (Lee) Swanger; and brother-in-law, Bill Wallis.
