WHITING, Iowa | Shirley Ann Richardson, 78, of Whiting, died Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, surrounded by her family.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa, with Evangelist Dale Wolf officiating. Burial will be in Whiting City Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Shirley Ann was born on Sept. 2, 1938, in Whiting, the daughter of Harold and Menta (Mendelko) Nelson. She grew up and attended school in Whiting and graduated from Whiting High School in 1956.

Shirley was united in marriage to Guy Dean Richardson on Sept. 15, 1956, at Onawa Christian Church in Onawa. Six children were born to this union, Rhonda, Steve, Gordon, Helen, Scott and Curtis. Guy passed away on Oct. 5, 2015, in Whiting.

Shirley was a homemaker and loved raising her family. She started working when all her children were in school. She worked for Lakin Grain in Whiting for several years and was the Whiting city clerk for many years.

Shirley and Guy always looked forward to their annual September trips to Wyoming. She also loved romance novels, word puzzles, flowers and spending time with her family. She enjoyed her screened-in porch, where she could observe animals and birds.

She is survived by her children, Rhonda (Don) Gomez of Whiting, Steve (Sandy) Richardson of Whiting, Gordon (Glenda) Richardson of Whiting, Helen Richardson (fiance, Scott Schechinger) of Manilla, Iowa, and Scott (Charlene) Richardson of Whiting; daughter-in-law, Shannon Richardson of Onawa; grandchildren, Chad McDonald, Matt McDonald, Charity Richardson, Amelia Richardson, Alesha Paulsen, Wayne Parks, Brittany Wensel, and Dezerea Richardson; stepgrandchildren, Kristine Fairchild, Kyla Collison, Kimberly Sulsberger, Kara Purgett, and Jake Johnson; 30 great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Doris Nelson of Texas, Eva May Nelson of Onawa and Kathy Hanks of Onawa.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Guy Dean Richardson; parents, Harold and Menta Nelson; son, Curtis Guy Richardson; her brothers, Raymond, Robert "Bus," Karl, Clifford, Gerald "Shorty," Fredrick "Johnny," Francis "Jimmy," and Milford; sisters, Lila Maxine "Blondie" and Lenora "Toadie"; one infant brother and one infant sister; one stepgrandson, Lucas Johnson; and her beloved dog, Max.
