Philip E. "Eugene" Johnston, Sr., 78, Council Bluffs, Iowa died of cancer August 31, 2005 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital, Council Bluffs.

Philip Eugene was born on December 12, 1926 to Philip J. and Dons E. (Burhngham) Johnston at Blencoe, Iowa He graduated from Blencoe High School with the class of 1944. He farmed in the Castana area before moving to Council Bluffs where he worked in the shipping and receiving department at Mutual of Omaha for 24 years, retiring in 1987. Eugene was a member of East Side Christian Church, a Lifetime member of the American Rabbit Breeders Association and the Iowa State Rabbit Breeders Association where he served as past-president He was also a member and past president of the American Tan Rabbit Association.

Philip Eugene married Jean Hathaway on August 27, 1950. They observed their 55th wedding anniversary.

Survivors include his wife Jean of Council Bluffs, three daughters, Kathy Harrison and husband Steve of Rapid City, SD, Patty Tracy and husband Curtis of Council Bluffs and Barb Johnston of Council Bluffs; two sons, Gene Johnston, Jr. and wife Sue of Omaha, NE and Dale Johnston of Council Bluffs; nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Warren Johnston.

Funeral Services were held Saturday, September 3, 2005 at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home with Rev. Jon Schrank, Pastor of East Side Christian Church officiating.

Visitation was held following the 6:00 p.m. prayer service Friday, September 2 at the Mortuary until 8:00 p.m. Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery with arrangements by Cutler - O'Neill - Meyer - Woodring Funeral Home.
