MAPLETON, Iowa -- Lawrence Russell "Russ" Nixon, 79, of Mapleton passed away Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, at his residence.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Fred Pilecki officiating. Burial will be in Belvedere Cemetery, Turin, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Russ was born Feb. 27, 1927, near Turin, Iowa, to Benjamin and Marie (Kennedy) Nixon. He lived with his parents in Turin, Castana, Hinton, Anthon and Mapleton. He graduated from Mapleton High School in 1945.

On Aug. 9, 1953, he was united in marriage to Joan Williamson of Castana, Iowa. The couple was blessed with four sons. He was always a farmer and livestock man. He retired from farming in 1986 due to heart problems, but continued living on the farm.

He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church. He enjoyed working with youth in 4-H, was an order buyer for cattle feeders and served in the Woodbury County Extension committee. His greatest love, however, was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joan; his sons, John Benjamin and his special friend, Diana of Minneapolis, Michael Lawrence and his wife, LeAnn of Mapleton and Richard Lynn and Raymond Lyle, both of Glenwood, Iowa; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Lorenzen.

He was preceded in death by his sister and her husband, Esther and Wilfred Gibson; a brother and his wife, Albert Buzz and Bernice Nixon; a sister and her husband, Shirley and Ronald Dirksen; and a brother-in-law, Irvin Lorenzen.
