Bernice Stockfleth-1915-2008

Bernice Stockfleth was born January 29, 1915, the daughter of Hans and Rosetta Jensen Hansen. She died Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at the Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa, at the age of ninety-three.

Bernice was born in Sioux City, Iowa. Her family later moved to the Ute area. She received her education in the Ute and Soldier area and was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Soldier. On December 22, 1932, Bernice was united in marriage to Alvin Stockfleth at Onawa. They were blessed with the birth of two children. The couple settled on a farm near Charter Oak where they lived for a few years before moving to a farm north of Schleswig. They remained on the farm until 1967 when they moved to their home in Schleswig. Bernice remained in Schleswig until 2003. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Socializing with her family and friends brought her great joy. She enjoyed baking, especially bread. Watching major league baseball was a favorite pastime for her. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, where she taught Sunday school for several years.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Alvin in 1992; one son, Vernon; and infant daughter, Joan.

Survivors include one daughter, JoAnn Hill and her husband, Lloyd of Lee Summit, Missouri; one daughter-in-law, Marian of Schleswig; two sisters, Roseanna Schroeder of Denver, Colorado, and Hazel Thies of Mapleton, Iowa; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 8, 2008, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the services and graveside rites at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Marlene Hight provided accompaniment for the congregational hymn, "How Great Thou Art." Soloist Eldon Hardekopf sang "Amazing Grace" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Those serving as pallbearers were Weldon Stockfleth, Richard Spencer, Irvin Thies, Nathan Stockfleth, Robert Hansen and Gary Thies. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid.

The Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.
