Former Monona County Sheriff Mark Whitmore Passes Away

Mark F. Whitmore, son of Weir and Pearl Whitmore, was born October 2, 1912, in Onawa, Iowa and passed from this life in Quartzsite, Arizona on March 21, 1983. Death came suddenly; he had reached the age of 70 years.

On October 18, 1936, he was united in marriage with Mabel Weaver in Dakota City. To this union two sons were born.

Mark served for a number of years as a Brick Mason and then as a law enforcement officer; serving as Monona County Sheriff from 1959 to 1969. He organized the first Special Deputies of Monona County. During World War II he answered the call of our County and served in the Air Force of the United States Army. He was a member of the American Legion of Onawa.

On March 9, 1947, he was baptized in the First Christian Church of Onawa. He was a member of Vesper Lodge Number 223 A.F. and A.M, The Sioux City Consistory and the Abu Bekr Shrine. He served as District Lecturer for the lodge for several years.

Mark also served as child care Councilor in Beresford, South Dakota, for a few years.

Survivors include his wife, Mabel of Onawa; one son, Thomas of Woldbach, Nebraska; one daughter, Marcella Johnston of Chicago, Illinois; four grandchildren, a few other relatives and a number of friends.

His parents, one sister and one son, Gerald Frances, preceded him in death.

Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, 1963, at the First Christian Church in Onawa.

Rev. Everett Epperson officiated with Rev. Jerry Quandt assisting. The organist, Mrs. John Johnston, played the selections, “Beyond The Sunset” and “The Lord’s Prayer.”

Honorary Bearers were Special Deputies who had served under Mark.

Active Bearers were Robert Prichard, John Althoff, Elroy Maule, Robert Maule, Ralph Miller and Harry Hoffman.

Masonic Services were conducted by Vesper Lodge No. 223 A.F. and A.M. of Onawa, Iowa.
