Death Of An Old Soldier

Fred Kirk Knapp was born in Quebec, Canada, August 7, 1846 and died in Rodney, Iowa, February 4, 1913, aged 66 years, 5 months and 27 days.

When a young man of 18 years he joined the 9th Iowa Cavalry, where he spent one year, being discharged with honors at the close of the war.

In 1880 he moved to Crawford County, settling at Denison where he lived for a number of years.

He was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Leese, November 16, 1884. To this union were born two sons and three daughters, all of whom survive him except one son, who died at the age of three years.

His wife also preceded him in death, having passed away in June 1909.

In 1884 he came to Monona County, where he has since made his home. In 1902 he came to Rodney as manager of the Smith Ranch.

For a number of years he has been a member of the I.O.O. F., being at the time of his death a member of the lodge.

He was a man who was highly respected by all who knew him, a good neighbor, and a kind and loving father. He leaves behind the best of earthly possessions- a host of friends.

The funeral was held at Rodney, in the Congregational Church, on Thursday, February 6, where a quartet of singers furnished the music, and Rev. Calkins, the pastor, preached the sermon, after which the Odd Fellows took charge of the services. The floral tributes were many and very beautiful.

Interment was made at St. Clair Cemetery, at Ute, by the side of his wife and little son.

Several friends from Rodney were present at the services at the grave, which were in charge of the Odd Fellows of Rodney assisted by the lodge at Ute.

The three daughters and son who remain have the sincere sympathy of a host of friends.
