WHITING, Iowa -- Donald Alfred Newman, 76, of Whiting died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, Iowa, with the Revs. Reva B. Karstens and Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Don was born at home on May 7, 1928, in Sioux City, the son of Ray and Eva (Deppe) Newman. He attended schools in Sioux City and Oto, Iowa.

He married Elsie Fowler. He worked for Northern Natural Gas Co. for 33 years in the plants and on construction in Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, California and Arizona. Through the years, Don and his wife also cared for 11 foster children.

He was baptized in the Methodist faith, but in his heart, he was interdenominational.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Elsie "Goose" of Whiting; two daughters, Gloria and her husband, Marty Kloster of Brookings, S.D. and Susan Oja of Cloquet, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Vicky Newman of Whiting; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alma Steklenberg of Grove, Okla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Patty Ann; a son, Donald Ray; a brother, Daryl; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Tom and Demis Fowler.
