Joyce I. Davis, 88, of Mapleton, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Joyce Ione Davis was born Feb. 24, 1927, at Ute, the daughter of Tony and Tillie (Mallum) Chamberlain. As a child, the family moved to Mapleton where Joyce graduated from Mapleton High School. She later worked at Knap Grocery Store and then for Dr. Harold Ganzhorn.

On Aug. 31, 1946, Joyce married Merle Davis at Mapleton. To this union were born two sons, Steve and Tony Davis.

In 1946, Merle along with the support of his wife, Joyce, started in the auto body business and owned and operated Davis Motor Company. With continued family support, the business will celebrate its 70th anniversary this year. Joyce also worked at the Maple Theater in Mapleton, a business Merle ran for a few years beginning in 1969. Along with supporting her children and husband, Joyce was a meticulous homemaker. Merle died Nov. 5, 1998.

Joyce was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Mapleton where she was active with the United Methodist Women activities. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Loren Hollister Unit #496 of Mapleton, a group that volunteered many hours at the Mapleton Food Pantry. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors and local card groups.

Those family members left to cherish Joyce’s memory include her two sons, Steve Davis of Glenrock, Wyo., and Tony Davis and his wife, Sandy, of Mapleton; daughter-in-law, Lorraine Davis of Ida Grove; five grandchildren, Melissa Davis Vermeys and her husband, Jary, of Kingsley, J.R. Davis of Ute, Eric Davis and his wife, Jeni, of Sioux City, Aaron Davis of Ankeny, and Clayton Davis of Ames; four great-grandchildren, Madison Vermeys, Eyerlyn Davis, Julia Davis, and Emalea Davis; and two sisters-in-law, Carolyn (Goodall) Chamberlain Diimig of California and Elaine Chamberlain of Mapleton.

Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Dwane, Tony “Jr.,” and Bill Chamberlain; and one sister and her husband, Norma Jean “Jinky” (Chamberlain) and Dick Berry.

The funeral was Saturday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton with Pastor Jena Manchester officiating. Visitation was one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers: J.R. Davis, Aaron Davis, Clayton Davis, Eric Davis, Jary Vermeys, Wes Arvin.

Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Mapleton.
