Service held for Paul McGarr

Paul Austin McGarr, the son of Charles and Ethel (Barr) McGarr, was born August 25, 1913 near Smithland, Iowa and died on January 13, 1980 at his residence near Mapleton, at the age of 66 years, 4 months and 18 days.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 1980, at the Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton. The Rev. Louis Aitken officiated with burial in the Mount Hope Cemetery at Mapleton.

Paul was united in marriage to Margurette Reed on May 27, 1940. To this union three sons and two daughters were born. He farmed for Bill McVicker and later in 1946, moved to his own farm 6 ˝ miles northwest of Mapleton. Paul farmed as well as worked on construction. He had worked for Anderson Constru., Treiber Constr., Ralph Habinck and the Christiansen Constr. of Nebraska. While working for Christiansen Constr. he helped to build the new addition to the Maple Valley High School. Paul had a great love of horses and in the Mapleton Bicentennial he drove a team of horses for the Mapleton Trust and Savings Bank and also rode a horse in the Mapleton Centennial parade. He was a member of Co-op, the Pinto Horse Assn., Farm Bureau and was active with the 4-H.

Survivors include the widow; three sons, Jerry of Crown Point, Indiana, Philip with the U.S. Navy in Alameda, California and C. Joe of Des Moines; two daughters, Mrs. Paula “Suzy” Rhoads of Gary, Indiana and Mrs. Doug (Lela) Shupe of Hornick; six grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Jerelda Bowman and Mrs. Louise Hughes, both of Mapleton, Mrs. Marcellus (Mary) Wolterman of Danbury, Mrs. John (Fanchon) Scheer of Los Angeles and Mrs. Wilmer (Maxine) Kirkpatrick of Crown Point and a half sister, Mrs. Charles (Norma Jean) Nance of Crown Point.

Casketbearers were Russ Nixon, Doug Washburn, Chris Helmbrecht, Art Worrell, Royce Rude and Delmar Anderson.

Honorary pallbearers were Ronald LeFebvre, Leonard Sanford, Bill McVicker, Wayne Schleef, Leonard Petersen and Leo Dean Sr.
