Josiah Edward Evans, only son of H.E. and Cora Pierson Evan was born at Yankton, S.D., Oct. 3, 1889.

When a small child his parents moved to a farm near Blencoe, later moving to the present farm home north of Onawa, where Joe, as he was familiarly called grew to manhood. He received his early education in the Onawa schools where in his freshman year in high school, his schooling, as well as his life's career, was abruptly interrupted. Joe was a strong, active lad enthusiastic over any form of athletics, particularly football, and it was while he was engaged in a game on the football field that he received an injury to his spine from which he had not recovered when spinal meningitis developed, leaving him a hopeless cripple. Realizing that the best to be had in the medical world had failed to help him; Joe made the best of his misfortune and by his cheerful friendly manner made many friends for himself. In spite of his physical, handicap Joe, determined to fit himself some line of work and entered a Commercial college at Quincy, Illinois where he took a business course following the completion of which he held positions with the Morrell Packing Company at Ottumwa, la., and with a Law firm at Topeka, Kansas.

In the fall of 1925 he had very severe attack, of influenza from which he never recovered and the last four years have been spent in various hospitals and sanitariums but the best of care and medical aid failed to build up a resistance suffent to overcome an attack of pneumonia which developed following a severe cold.

He passed away in a hospital at Cherokee, la., February 17 at the age of 40 years, 4 months and 14 days.

He is survived by his mother Mrs. Cora Evans and two sisters Esther and Ruth all of Onawa. Funeral services were conducted from the home at 2 o'clock on Wednesday Feb. 19 with Rev. George Croker of Whiting officiating and the Brown Funeral Home in charge.
