James Mehl was born in Norway in the year of 1864. When a young man he came to America and spent a few years with his brother John near Morris, Ill. About thirty years ago he came to Iowa and joined his brother John in farming in Sherman Township. In 1909 he moved to Onawa where he made his home most of the time. During the time that he made his home in Onawa he spent few months in company with his brother John in southern California but since 1912 has resided here in Onawa continuously, until December 26, 1929 when after a short illness he passed away at the home of Mrs. Wm. Lawrenson, where, he had been making his home for some time. James Mehl was an honest, industrious man and as a result of his industry and economy during his younger days, accumulated considerable property which enabled him to live a retired life since coming to Onawa.

Mr. Mehl was of a retiring and conservative disposition and for that reason had but few, intimate friends. As far as it is known at this time, the only relatives he has in America are some cousin at Morris, Ill. The supposition is that he has a step-mother and at least one sister still living in Norway.
