ONAWA, Iowa - Edna Jeanette Hansen, 95, of Harlan, Iowa, formerly of Turin, Iowa, and Onawa, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Pearson Funeral Chapel in Onawa, with the Rev. E. Jon Benson officiating. Burial will be in Belvidere Cemetery, Turin. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Pearson Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Onawa.

Mrs. Hansen was born Jan. 17, 1905, in Campbell, Neb., the daughter of Henry and Nellie (Berg) Hanson. She moved with her family to Whiting, Iowa, in 1907.

She attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated as valedictorian from Whiting High School in 1923. She attended the University of Iowa for one year. She then graduated from Van Sants School of Business in Omaha, in 1926.

She began teaching in Sioux Township, Monona County, Iowa, then taught at Jordan Township, Monona County, from 1927 to 1928.

She married Nels Hansen on May 19, 1928, in Onawa. The couple farmed for one year near Turin. In 1929, they moved to a farm near Fort Calhoun, Neb. In 1949, they purchased a farm near Turin, where they farmed until retiring to Onawa in 1971.

He died March 5, 1993. She then entered Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan.

She was a member of Turin United Methodist Church and a former member of Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church, and held various offices at both churches. She was a member of Ladies Aid, where she held offices, and was a Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed playing cards, dancing, music and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Les and Marge of Libertyville, Ill.; a daughter and her husband, Faye and LeRoy Kannas of Harlan; four grandchildren, Kenneth and Dale Williamson, Janet Zimmerman and Lori Finken; 11 great-grandchildren; and two brothers-in-law, Harvey Hansen and his wife, Thelma, of Turin and Donald Erickson of Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Florence Rodgers, and a great-granddaughter.
