Joseph William Koenigs, 85, died Dec. 22 in Mapleton. He was born May 1, 1929, to Joseph H. and Geneva M. (Germsheid) Koenigs in Mapleton. He attended St. Mary¹s Catholic School in Mapleton through the eighth grade and graduated from Mapleton High School in 1947.

While in school, he attended Sprayberry Academy of Radio, was a projectionist at the Maple Theater, and worked at the Coast to Coast as a radio repairman and salesman. After graduation, he started a radio repair business in his father¹s furniture, insurance, and appliance store. Joe was also licensed in the insurance business. He attended RCA TV School and Gibson Appliance School. With his training, Joe started Little Joe’s TV and Appliance Store on Main Street in Mapleton in 1947.

Joe was united in marriage to Jean Underwood on Aug. 25, 1953, in Spencer. To that union, three children were born, Ann Marie, Joseph T., and Thomas A.

Joe was the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

“Little Joe” served many years on the Retail Committee for the Mapleton Club and volunteered two terms on the Mapleton City Council. He also served as lay minister and usher at his parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mapleton. He was a member of the Mapleton Club, the Knights of Columbus, and Maple Valley Development Committee. He was also a private pilot and owned his own airplane.

He retired from his downtown business, Little Joe’s TV and Appliance, in 1991. but built a shop at home to repair appliances, a skill appreciated by his community.

Jean passed away Feb. 11, 1995.

Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, boating, golfing and water skiing. The family owned a place in Okoboji and loved spending time there in the summers and on weekends. Above all, Joe treasured the time he shared with his family.

Those family members remaining to honor their memories of Joe are his three children; his daughter, Ann Uhl, and her husband, Rick, of Sergeant Bluff, and their children, Jennifer Garrison and her husband, Matt, and their children, McKenzie and Madison, and Jason Uhl, his son, Joe Koenigs, Jr., and his wife, Jan, of Sioux City, and their children, Jody Sanford and her husband, Daniel, and their children, Kayle, Kaitlyn, and Christopher, Julie Babb and her husband, Thomas, and their children, Nathan, Jaycee, and Allie, and Jeri Gossett and her husband, James, and their children, Alona and Jenna, and his son, Tom Koenigs and his wife, Kelly, of Sergeant Bluff, and their children, Michael Koenigs and his wife, Mary, and their daughter, Hannah and Katie Koenigs and her fiancée, Clayton King; one sister, Ruth Oregon of Sioux City; one brother-in-law, Bob Heidman of Watertown, Wisc.; along with many nieces and nephews; and many good friends.


Along with his loving wife, Jean, Joe was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lorraine Heidman; and one brother-in-law, Kenneth Oregon.

Funeral Mass: Saturday, Dec. 27, 10:30 a.m.
, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 
Mapleton.

Deacon Ray Rosburg.

 Visitation: Saturday, Dec. 27, 9 a.m. until Mass time at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Mapleton.

Interment: St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, 
Mapleton.


Following the interment service at the cemetery, everyone was invited and encouraged to go to the church basement for a time of sharing food and fellowship.
