Doris Irene (Still) Lacey, 89, was born Feb. 2, 1925, outside of Holstein, the fourth of 10 children to Lee and Nellie (Hawn) Still. In her early years, her family lived outside of Minot, N.D. for 10 years until repeated drought brought them back to a farm north of Ida Grove.

She graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1943, then headed on an adventure to Portland, Ore., with a cousin to work in the shipyards during World War II. After returning home, she taught at Silver Creek Township country school.

Doris married Garth Wm. Lacey on June 17, 1944. She and her husband farmed land near Danbury, which has been in the Lacey family since 1922. She was blessed to remain on the farm for 70 years.

She and Garth were always so grateful to God for the blessing of raising their four adopted children, their first child passing away at the age of three in a tragic accident.

Doris was a Garfield Township 4-H leader and enjoyed her lifetime club friends of the Pleasant Valley Club, Garfield Women’s Club, and the Birthday Club.

She was a woman of many talents and loved cooking, flowers, sewing, and was refinishing furniture and remodeling her home into her 70s. She absolutely loved people and opened her door to all. Her life with Jesus Christ showed through in her helping and concern for others.

Survivors include her children: Douglas (Gail) Lacey of Hinton, Debra Lacey of Danbury, and Deanne Quayle of Danbury; her 13 grandchildren: Ben (Katie) Lacey, Seattle, Wash., Jennifer (Nathaniel) Feddes, Albuquerque, N.M., Jill (Shane) Furgason, Iowa City, Megan (Michael) Slate, Gastonia, N.C., Kristopher (Val) Quayle, Forest City, Jesse Quayle, Forest City, IA, Levi Quayle, Ames, IA and Isaiah Quayle, Mason City, IA; eight great-grandchildren: Eva, Vivian, Daphne, and Bianca Lacey, Jonathan and Callen Feddes, Gracie and Samuel Slate; sisters: Gladys Bower, Ida Grove, June Grieve, Sacramento, Calif., Audrey (Walter) Kent, Lompoc, Calif.; brother: Marvin (Bette) Still, Sioux City; and sisters-in-law: Doris Still, Holstein, Irene Meyer, Seal Beach, Calif., Jean Still, Spirit Lake; many nieces and nephews; and good friends.
