SMITHLAND, Iowa | Ralph D. Martin, 88, of Smithland passed away on Oct. 24, 2014, at a Sioux City hospital after a massive stroke.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto, Iowa, with the Rev. Dan Greving officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Mapleton, Iowa, with military rites provided by the American Legion Leslie Seaton Post 666 of Smithland. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. Visitation resumes 9:30 a.m. until service time Thursday the church.

Ralph Dwight Martin was born on May 19, 1926, in Sioux City, to Grover and Edna (McQuillen) Martin.

Ralph married Lavonne Cooper on June 22, 1946. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a National Guard member. Ralph was employed at Mac’s Chevrolet in Mapleton for 42 years, retiring in 1988.

Ralph and Lavonne enjoyed traveling in retirement, spending winters in Arizona. He was a member of the Willow Vale Golf Club and a past president of the Midwest Seniors Golf Association which he thoroughly enjoyed. He served on the Westwood School Board and was proud to be able to hand all three of his daughters their diplomas.

He is survived by daughters, Vicki (Gary) Musselman of Mitchell, S.D., and Susan Green of Sioux City; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Donna; along with numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Ralph was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years; his youngest daughter, Michelle; his parents; two brothers, Donald and Gene; and two sisters, Sina and Marge.
