Mapleton, Iowa - Loretta H. Schleis, 96, of Mapleton, Iowa passed away at home Wednesday, October 1, 2014 with her son at her side. The funeral Mass will be Friday, October 3, 2014, (Loretta's 97th birthday) at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton with Rev. Dan Greving officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Mapleton. Visitation will be Thursday, October 2 after 4:00 p.m. with the Rosary by St. Mary's Guild at 4:30 p.m. and a Vigil Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Loretta Helen Schleis was born October 3, 1917, on the family farm west of Danbury, Iowa, the daughter of Xavier and Mary (Ehrig) Uhl. She attended St. Mary's Catholic School at Danbury.

On October 13, 1941, she married Al Schleis. They farmed east of Mapleton all their life.

Mr. Schleis died February 16, 1989.

Mrs. Schleis was a member of St. Mary's Parish at Mapleton and also a member of St. Mary's Guild.

She is survived by a son, Richard "Dick" Schleis of Mapleton; sisters-in-law, Rita Bode and Stella Schleis; and many nieces and nephews.

Along with her husband, Loretta was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank, Joe, Ray and John Uhl and his wife, Lucille; three sisters, Josephine Wimmer and her husband, Joe, Elizabeth Richtermeier and her husband, Cletus and Sally Schleis and her husband, George; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Leo Schleis, Lawrence and Loretta Schleis, Siv and Irene Rauterkus, Carl Bode, and Tom and Babe Halterman.
