Guy Cooper Dies of Battle Wounds
First Castana Young Man To Lose Life Was at Iwo Jima With Marines

Guy Raymond Cooper, Ph. M 3/c, 19 years old, died March 26 from battle wounds received March 16 while in action with the 5th Marine division on Iwo Jima.

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Cooper of Castana, he is the first Castana young man to make the supreme sacrifice in World War II.

Born October 26, 1925, at Castana, Cooper attended Castana high school. He enlisted in the Navy July 14, 1943, when he was a Junior. He received his “boot” training at Farragut, Idaho.

Transferring to the Marines, he went to San Diego, Cal., for training. He went overseas in July, 1944, for duty with the 5th Marines.

He is survived by his parents; two sisters, Mrs. Gilbert Jackson of Walnut, Ia., and Mrs. Gilbert Heisler of Bellevue, Neb.; one brother, Russell Cooper of Castana; his grandmother, Mrs. M. E. Bennett of Onawa; two nieces and two nephews.

He is a nephew of Alva Cooper of Mapleton.
