Mabel R. Johnson, 96, of Onawa, Iowa, died Wednesday, May 12, 1999, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa.

She was born January 16, 1903, rural Whiting, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Grace (Chilsom) Riedeman. She graduated from Onawa High School in 1922. She received six weeks of library training at the University of Iowa at Iowa City.

On January 24, 1927, she married Clarence Johnson at Vermillion, South Dakota. The couple lived in Mapleton and in Atlantic, Iowa. Mr. Johnson died in November 1962 at Atlantic. Following his death she moved to Torrance, Calif. where she resided for fifteen years with her sister, Lucille Agnew. In 1978 she returned to Onawa to make her home.

She was an assistant librarian in the Onawa library, the Mapleton library, the Carroll library, and the city library in Atlantic, Iowa.

She was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Onawa; the church circle; a 70 year member of Queen Esther Chapter #222 Order of Eastern Star in Onawa; a former member of Eastern Star at Mapleton and in California; and a member of Chapter EF PEO in Onawa.

She is survived by a nephew and his wife, Gary and Nancy Carlson of Moorhead, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three sisters, Blanche Carlson, Lucille Agnew and Ferne Letterly Clubine.

Graveside Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 15, 1999, at the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa, with Rev. John Noer officiating.

Casket Bearers were John Fister, Steve Carlson, Gary Carlson and Paul Gochenour.

Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa, with arrangements by Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
