Onawa, Iowa-- John Leroy "Jack" Schallau, 68, of Onawa died Thursday, April 28, 1999, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church in Onawa with the Rev. Donald R. Ludwig officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2694 of Onawa. Visitation will be to from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa, and one hour prior to service on Monday.

Mr. Schallau was born Sept. 15, 1930, in Gaza, Iowa, the son of Irvin and Joye (Triplett) Schallau. He graduated from Quimby High School, Quimby, Iowa in 1948 and attended Iowa State for one year. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Alaska. He lived in the Cherokee, Iowa, area before moving to Onawa in 1955.

He married Nancy Reynolds on May 1, 1955, in Onawa. He was vice president of field operations with Younglove Construction Co. in Sioux City for 45 years.

He was a member of First Christian Church, American Legion David McNeil Post 129 of Onawa and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9776 of Ashland, Neb. He served as a committee member with Ducks Unlimited - Onawa Chapter. He enjoyed sports, hunting, fishing and golf.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Sally and Jon Towne and Pam and Jerry Dunning, all of Onawa; three granddaughters, Lindsey, Alison and Elicia Towne; five brothers, Irvin of Steamboat Rock, Iowa, Dick and his wife, Pat of Spencer, Iowa, Jim and his wife, Lois of Cherokee, Ronald of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Mike and his wife, Dayle of Parkersburg, W.V.; a sister and her husband, Pat and Bill Carson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers-in-law, Dale Sherrill of Lead, S.D., and Bob Quam of Winnetka, Calif. and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law; and three sisters, Shirley Sherrill, Loretta Quam and Rita Peck.
