Vernon Robert King was born September 7, 1935, south of Charter Oak, IA, the son of Eugene Byron and Harriet Mabel (Weed) King and passed away Thursday, August 14, 2014, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, IA.

He graduated from Odebolt High School in 1954. On June 23, 1957, Vernon married La Donna Marie Klaus at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ute, IA.

He worked at IBP, farmed, put miles of fence in, and drove a school bus for the Charter Oak/Ute School. He worked in insurance sales for Farm Mutual until his retirement, when he and La Donna moved to Adair, IA.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adair and served the church in multiple capacities. He was a Thrivent Board member as well as a member of the Optimist Club serving as President and Lieutenant Governor.

Vernon was always busy, he didn’t like to be idle. He never knew a stranger and enjoyed visiting, playing cards, and listening to Polka and Country Western music.

Preceding Vernon in death were his parents, Eugene and Hattie King; his siblings, Robert, Mildred and Ethel Marie all in childhood, Evelyn Podey and Merlin King; his mother and father-in-law, Ernest and Leona Klaus; and his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Milford Klaus, Orvan Klaus, Dorothy Fisher, Wilma Neumann and Sharon Swink. He is survived by his wife, La Donna King of Adair, IA; his sons, Shawn King of Ute, IA, and Scott (Donna) King of Des Moines, IA; his daughter, Susan (Lenard) Lemke of Casey, IA; his grandchildren, Bryan King and Brittany (Craig) Cooley all of Des Moines, IA, Carlen Lemke and Waylen Lemke both of Casey, IA; his sisters, Deloris (Jack) Jessen and Pearl (Ed) Schau all of Denison, IA; his brother, Roy King of Hayfield, MN; his sisters-in-law, Doris Thompson of Omaha, NE and LaRue Tanner of Colorado Springs, CO; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday September 1, 2014, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Adair. Lunch and a time for visitation will be held following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date in the St. Claire Cemetery in Ute, IA
