10 September 1997

Joyce Arlene Nichols, 71, of Linden, Tennessee, formerly of Onawa, Iowa, died Saturday August 30, 1997, at the home of her daughter after more than a year's battle with cancer.

Mrs. Nichols was born April 19,1926, at Ticonic, Iowa, to George R. and Laverne B. (Chase) Carroll. On December 7, 1943, she married Arthur L. Nichols in Onawa. To this union seven children were borne Dennis, Robert, Arlene, Franklin, Ronald, Jolene and Marlene. Mr. Nichols died July
20, 1966, in Onawa.

She worked hard all of her life and loved her family very dearly. While living in Iowa, Marlene shared nursing duties with Arlene. Several months ago, she moved to Tennessee from Iowa to live with her daughter, Arlene and her husband, Loman Bailey, so they could care for her. She loved her home in Iowa, but could no longer stay by herself. Woods Prong of Cedar Creek became her new home, and she loved to sit on the front porch and watch the chickens, goats, cattle, dear in the neighbor's pasture, and the beautiful hills surrounding the area. She loved the peace and quiet in the country on the "Bailey Ranch", and she often said that she'd never lived in such a beautiful place in her life.

Survivors include one son and his wife, Dennis and Rita Nichols of Sloan, Iowa; two daughters, Arlene and her husband, Loman Bailey of Linden, Tennessee and Marlene Nichols Hail of Bellevue, Nebraska; 1 brother and his wife, Donald and Helen Carroll of Pocahontas, Illinois; and 1 sister and her husband, Georgia and Norman Schoenherr of Onawa, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, 3 sons, Ronald, Robert Wayne, and Franklin; 1 daughter, Jolene Hinrickson; and 1 granddaughter, Megan.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 3, 1997 at the Pearson Funeral Chapel in Onawa, Iowa, with Pastor Donald R. Ludwick officiating. Chapel music provided was "Beyond the Sunset" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere".

Casket bearers were Tommy Huntley, Jon Huntley, T.J. Huntley, Clint Nichols, Robert Nichols and Robert Crouch.

interment was in the Onawa Cemetery at Onawa, Iowa, with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa.
