MAPLETON, Iowa — Elmer Robert Cooper, 74, of Mapleton died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Edmund Tiedeman. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496 of Mapleton. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a vigil wake service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Mr. Cooper was born Sept. 5, 1924, in Mapleton, the son of Alva and Florence (Kurth) Cooper. He was raised in the Mapleton area and graduated from Mapleton High School in 1942.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He married Mariam Welte on June 30, 1947, in Danbury, Iowa.

He was employed with Simonsen Rendering Service for 43 years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496. He was a retired member of the Mapleton Volunteer Fire Department, where he served for more than 30 years.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Patricia Cooper of Mapleton; three sons and their wives, Ron and Jeanette of Sergeant Bluff, Dan and Marlene of Mapleton and Tom and Diane of Battle Creek, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, Scott, Brent, Stacey, Heidi, Christi, Laurie, Amy, Cheryl, Aaron and Brandon Cooper; a sister and her husband, Voni and Ralph Martin of Smithland, Iowa; and a brother-in-law, Lawrence Powell of Mapleton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Verna Mae Powell; and a granddaughter, Heather Cooper.
