MAPLETON, Iowa — George William Castle Jr., 79, of Mapleton died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 1997, at the Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Edmund Tiedeman officiating. Burial will be in St.Mary's Catholic Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496 of Mapleton. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a vigil wake service at 7:30 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Mr. Castle was born March 8, 1918, in Ticonic, Iowa, the son of James and Dorothy (Ultsch) Castle. He was made his home in the Ticonic and Mapleton areas, moving into Mapleton in 1949.

He married Marcella Tidd on June 3, 1941, in Mapleton. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1944. He was employed as a caterpillar operator for Lloyd Olson Construction for many years before becoming a self-employed caterpillar operator for 10 years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Don and Donna of Mapleton; a daughter-in-law, Barb Castle of Mapleton; six brothers, Russ of Rodney, Iowa, Harold and his wife Gladys of Yankton, S.D., Jim and his wife Jo and Art and his wife Jean, all of Smithland, Iowa, Gary and his wife Betty and Leslie and his wife Janice, all of Mapleton; three sisters, Ada Habinck and Eva and her husband Paul Schumacher, all of Mapleton, and Darlene and her husband Joe Williams of Auburn, Calif. eight grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Bill; and a brother Floyd.
