James Alva Martin, 58, of Onawa, Iowa, died Friday, November 6, 1998, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.
James was born June 10, 1940, 3 1/2 miles West of Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Glen and Hila (Kelsheimer) Martin. He grew up in the Mapleton area and graduated from Mapleton High School in 1960, he married Georgia Clapper at Onawa. To this marriage were born 1 son and 3 daughters, Jim, Debra, Lisa, and Wanda. He lived in Texas for 15 years. In 1981, he married Wanda Culver in Dunlap where they made their home. They had 3 sons, Glen, Jeffrey, and Thomas. He had been a painter and a heavy equipment operator for construction until his illness. He moved to Onawa 3 years ago.
Survivors include 4 sons, Jim Johnson and his wife, Mary of Atlantic, Iowa, Glen Martin, Jeffrey Martin, and Thomas Martin, all of Dunlap, IA.; 3 daughters, Debra and her husband, LaVearl Timmer of LuVerne, Minnesota, Lisa Simpson of Onawa, and Wanda and her husband, Philip Moore of Onawa; 1 stepson, Kelly Culver of Dunlap, IA; and 4 sisters, Beatrice and her husband, Ivan Walker of Pierson, Iowa, Virginia Munoz of Arvada, Colorado, Joan Hayworth of Anthon, Iowa, and his twin sister, Barb and her husband, Joe Garlington of Pineville, Louisiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers.
Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 10, 1998, at the Pearson Funeral Chapel, Onawa, Iowa, with Pastor Donald R. Ludwick officiating.
Casket Bearers were Roger Saxen, Joe Garlington, Ivan Walker, Philip Moore, Alfred Derrick, and Jeff Campbell.
Interment was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Mapleton, Iowa, with arrangements by Pearson.
