Spencer, Iowa — Walter Alvin Muller, 70, of Spencer, formerly of Ida Grove, Mapleton and Battle Creek, Iowa, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at Spencer Municipal Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, with the Rev. Thomas Sabel officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, with military rites conducted by
Loren Hollister Post 496 of Mapleton and American Legion Post 364 of Battle Creek. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Muller was born March 9, 1929, near Ida Grove, the son of Walter Franklin and Nellie Grace (Warn) Muller. He attended country school and Ida Grove Public School. He graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1946. He worked with his father and brother. He was employed as a truck driver for Frank Pilley and Sons.

He married Marian Rita Brooks on April 16, 1950, in Mapleton. He served in the U.S. Air Force from
1951 to 1952, stationed in Maine, Wyoming and Louisiana. Following his discharge, the couple farmed for four years and then moved to California in 1959. He was employed with Sears and Roebuck Co. for nine years. They returned to Mapleton in 1968, where they owned and operated Paramount Cafe. He also was employed with Mac's Chevrolet and Reed's Furniture Store in Mapleton.

In 1977, they moved to Battle Creek, where they owned and operated the Ugly Duckling Restaurant until 1982. He was then employed as a custodian at Ida County Court House, retiring in 1987. They moved to Spencer in 1992. He entered Longhouse Care Center in January 1999.

He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 364 in Battle Creek. He was a former member of Mapleton Fire Department and Toast Masters Club in California.

He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Kathy and Ron Foxhoven of Spencer; three
grandchildren, Eric, Sherry and Brenda Foxhoven; a great-grandson; a sister, Marjorie Paulsen of Ida Grove; three brothers-in-law, Jim and his wife, Betty Stone of Mapleton, Leslie and his wife, Shirley Muckey of Garden Grove, Calif., and Bob Blockel of Cedarburg, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Patricia Marie; and a brother, Kenneth.
