MAPLETON, Iowa — Tom Ronald Masters, 98, of Mapleton died Sunday, April 6, 1997, at the Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, with Curtis
Masters, his grandson, officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery at Castana, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Grimsley-Thayer Post 502 of Castana. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.Mr. Masters was born March 13, 1898, in Center Township near Mapleton, the son of Jesse and Julia (Perrin) Masters. He graduated from Mapleton High School in 1916.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War I. He was later honored by the American Legion for being the last surviving veteran of World War I in Monona County.
He married Eula Wintermute on June 22, 1929, in Blockton, Iowa.
He farmed in the Mapleton area, retiring in 1963 and moving into town.
Mr. Masters was a member of Faith Bible Church in Mapleton and the American Legion Grimsley-Thayer Post 502.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Dwight and Alice of Mapleton; a daughter and her husband, Kathryn and Raymond Haafke of Bronson, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Phyliss Master of Le Mars, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grand-children; and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by a son, Philip; a daughter, Elaine in infancy; a granddaughter, Judy Bramble; a great-grandson; and a brother,
