13 October 1983Leonard Adolph Melby, son of Adolph and Lena Evenson Melby was born December 5, 1919 in Monona County and passed away September 19, 1983 at the age of 63 at the Dunlap Care Center after a short illness.
He was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Soldier. On December 10, 1938 he was married to Mildred Pedersen at Soldier. He was inducted into the Army in 1945. Most of his life was spent farming around Moorhead. He was employed at Woodbine Manufacturing the past 10 years, but was forced to retire in December of 1982 due to illness.
He is survived by his wife, three children, Marvin of Logan, Joan Gau and Lois Rudd, both of Dunlap, ten grandchildren and one great grandson, five sisters, Agney Weber, Lorraine Price and Gilma Kline of Dunlap, Mildred Andrews, and Edna Hull of Moorhead, three brothers, Willard of Dunlap, Arnold of Soldier and Dale of Woodbine, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Kenneth, two infant sisters and an infant brother and one grandson, Tommy.
Services were held at St. John Lutheran Church in Dunlap on Thursday, September 22, 1983 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Wendell Berggren officiating. Mrs. Betty Berggren accompanied soloist Larry Sydow as he sang "Rugged Cross", "God Be With You Until We Meet Again', and "Rock Of Ages".
Bearers were Bruce Reis, Jerry Mathison, Joe Renz, Ronald Lee, Charles Hinkel and Jim Fitzgerald.
Interment was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Dunlap, Iowa with arrangements by Fouts Funeral Home.
Honorary Bearers were George Hull, Paul Weber, Don Price, Duane Melby, Mike Melby, Dave Melby, Bernard Andrews and Gayland Burson.
