Raymond Clarence Melby,78, LeMars, Iowa, died February 24, 1990, at the Abbey Nursing Home of LeMars.

He was born December 17, 1911, near Moorhead, Iowa, to Oscar and Christina (Lundberg) Melby. On June 30, 1935, he married Evelyn Leon Hein at Dunlap, Iowa. He farmed in the Moorhead area for eight years then moved to Soldier where he continued farming and also truck gardening until the late 1950 early 1960's. He lived in Sioux City where he worked for Goodwill Industries. He moved to The Abbey in LeMars where he remained until his death.

He was a member of the Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier.

Survivors include: two sons, Dennis and his wife, Florence, Melby of York, Nebraska; and Gary and his wife, Sue, Melby of Escondido, California; three daughters, Mrs. Wayne (Moraine) Hasbrouck of Clear Lake, Iowa; Mrs. Jack (Nancy) Roden of San Marcos, California; and Christy Vivion of Huntington Beach, California; two brothers: Clark Melby of Dunlap and Wilbur Melby of Pisgah; one sister: Ella Schlensig of Soldier; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Harry Robert, Norman and Earl; and one sister, Olga; and an infant son, Maynard Eugene.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 1990, at the Soldier Lutheran Church with Pastor Larry Sydow officiating. Mrs. Ivan Gibbs, the organist, played "Rock Of Ages" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Bearers were Vernon Melby, Rick Melby, Clarion Melby, Randy Melby, Maynard Melby and Terry Melby.

Interment was in the Soldier Lutheran Cemetery with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home, Soldier, Iowa.
