5 June 1980Howard C. Melby, Soldier, Iowa, passed away Monday, May 26, 1980 at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.
Mr. Melby was born March 18, 1915, at Soldier to John and Sadie Nelson Melby. On February 17, 1944, he was united in marriage to Esther Leisinger at Onawa, Iowa During World War II he served his country in the Army. He was a lifetime resident of the Soldier community and a farmer.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church at Soldier and the Soldier American Legion Post No. 462.
Survivors include his wife, Esther, at home; two daughters Mrs. Bill (Peg) Voss, Onawa, Iowa, and Mrs. Russell (Loretta) McCall, Decatur, Nebraska; two sons, Terry Melby, Moorhead and Marty Onawa; two sisters, Mrs. Earl (Laverne) Rustin, Soldier, and Mrs. Morris (Delores) Rustin, Whiting; two brothers, Cleo Melby Castana and Milton Melby, Soldier and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 daughter, Saundra, 1 grandchild; 2 sisters, Ruby and Corrine, and 1 brother Glen.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday May 28, 1980 at the Soldier Lutheran Church at Soldier
with Rev. William Carter officiating. The organist, Mrs.Leonard Jensen, accompanied the Men's Quartet, Gene Brenden, Gordon Foss, Gordon Swenson and James Severson, who sang "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross".Active bearers were Harvey Leisinger, Roger Melby, Kevin Melby, Eugene Melby, Bryan Melby, and Donnie Rustin.
Honorary bearers were Marvin Leisinger, Bobbie Rustin and Russell Melby.
Interment was in the Soldier Lutheran Church Cemetery with Military Services by Soldier Post No. 462 John Dickinson, Commander.
Arrangements were by the Pearson Funeral home of Soldier, Iowa.
