Margaret Alice Means 1871 - 1963

Margaret Alice Means, daughter of Martin and Josephine Nutt, was born December 24, 1871 in Center Township near Castana, and she died Wednesday, May 29, 1963 at a Sioux City hospital after a long illness. She was 91 years, five months, and five days old.

She was the fifth child in a family of eight children, and she lived for about 70 years in the Castana community. For the next twenty years she made her home in Sioux City with her daughter, Mrs. Russell Bee. The last year and a half she resided with all of her children. She was one of the early Castana pioneers, but she has adjusted well with the changing times.

Mrs. Means was married to John Means on March 9, 1886 at McCook Lake, S. D. To this union Six daughters and four sons were born. Her husband preceded her in death in 1922. She was a long-time member of the Castana Christian Church, and was presently a member of the Castana Community Church. She was a former member of the Rebekah Lodge at Castana.

She is survived by six daughters: Mrs. Mabel Cooper of Onawa; Mrs. David (Ida) Davis of Danbury; Mrs. Lester (Josephine) Davis, Turin; Mrs. Russell (Florence) Boe, Sioux City; Mrs. Millie Anderson, Sioux City; and Mrs. Beulah Mitchell of Sioux City. Two sons; Adolph and Earl of Mapleton, 24 grandchildren, 67 great grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Ida Carroll of Hermosa, S. D. She also leaves many other relatives and a host of friends.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, two sons, two sisters, and four brothers.

Services were held Friday, May 31, 1963 at the Castana Community Church with the Rev. Martin Mosier officiating.

The pallbearers were: Leo Davis, Marvin Means, Dale Means, Everett Davis, Elzie Cooper and Pat Gearen. Burial was in Center Cemetery under the direction of the Walter Funeral Home.
