Phillip Lee Melby, 50, of Castana, Iowa died Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center, Sioux City, Iowa following a battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, July 19, 2014 at the Soldier Lutheran Church, Soldier, Iowa with Pastor Joel Gueningsman and Pastor Harvey Hanson, officiating. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery, rural Castana, Iowa. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, July 18, 2014 with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. at the Rush Family Chapel, Onawa, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

Phillip Lee Melby was born May 9, 1964 the son of Eugene and Shirley (McCall) Melby. He graduated from Maple Valley High School, Mapleton, Iowa with the class of 1983.

Phil worked for various places including: John Morrell, Wilson Trailer, Sioux Tractor, Sabres, and he drove truck until his illness stopping him from working.

He loved demolition derbies, cutting trees for wood, and enjoyed hunting. Phil is a member of the Soldier Lutheran Church, Soldier, Iowa.

Survivors include his special friend, Jill Grell of Danbury, Iowa; his parents, Eugene "Gene" and Shirley Melby of Castana, Iowa; his brother, Stephen Melby of Castana, Iowa; special nephew and nieces, Nick, Erin, and Heather Melby; several aunts and uncles; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Lee and Bernadine McCall; his paternal grandparents, Cleo and Marge Melby; and his brother, Todd Melby.
