Vernie Elberta Daugherty, 90, of Castana, Iowa, died Sunday, January 17, 1999, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.

Mrs. Daugherty was born January 23, 1908, at Little Sioux, Iowa, the daughter of Bert N. and Ada (Gray) Shearer. She married Roy Albert Daugherty on February 24, 1923, at Blencoe, Iowa.

She was a housewife and a farming partner with her husband. Mr. Daugherty died July 13, 1983, at Onawa. She continued to live on their farm near Castana.

She was baptized in the Congregational Church in Blencoe. She attended the Evangelical Free Church in Onawa.

Survivors include one daughter, Joyce DuMond of Soldier, Iowa; one son, Tom Daugherty and his wife, Judy of Cape Coral, Florida; three grandsons, Randall DuMond and his wife, LaDonna of Soldier; Barry C. DuMond of Castana; Matthew Daugherty and Kim of Fort Myers, Florida; one granddaughter, Melinda and her husband Keith Hall of Cape Coral, Florida; two great-granddaughters, Amy DuMond of Sioux City, Iowa and Lisa and her husband Chris Hupp of Soldier; a great-grandson, Jacob Daugherty of Fort Myers, Florida; a great-great grandson, Jesse Hupp of Soldier; one sister, Gladys Kelly of Onawa; and a brother, Jess Shearer of Little Sioux, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother Alfred Shearer and a sister Bertha Flint.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 20, 1999 at the Pearson Funeral Chapel in Onawa, Iowa, with Rev. Paul E. Anderson officiating. The music selections were "In The Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross".

Casket Bearers were Rex Flint, Bruce Flint, Joe Harris, Matthew Daugherty, Keith Hall and Roger Mastine. Honorary Bearers were all of her nephews.

Interment was in Graceland Cemetery at Blencoe, Iowa. Arrangements were by the Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
