Leo W. Maxwell, 72, of Rexford, beloved husband and father, died peacefully at home Feb. 11, 2003. He finally lost his fight with cancer.

The funeral service was held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church and a graveside service was held at the Tobacco Valley Cemetery on Feb. 18. Leo's cremated remains were transported from the church to the cemetery via fire truck.

Leo was born Feb. 8, 1931, in Blencoe, Iowa. He was reared with his three brothers by Walter and Marie Maxwell, Iowa farmers.

He entered the U. S. Navy in January 1951 and fought during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in December 1954.

Leo worked for Union Oil in California prior to being hired as a Downey, Calif., firefighter in December 1961. He earned his fire science degree from East Los Angeles Cane in January 1971. He retired in November 2002 as fire captain.

Leo and his wife, June, moved to the West Kootenai approximately 16 years ago. Leo truly enjoyed the Northwestern Montana environment, community, and fellowship.

He married June B. Bilski in July 1955. They enjoyed 47 years of marriage.

His survivors include his wife, his daughter, Frances M. Correia, his daughter, Andrea M. Deichert and her husband Robert, his son, Brian W. Maxwell and Brian's wife Cheri and their daughter Jessica.

Leo enjoyed life to its fullest. He was one of the best story tellers, practical jokers, and teasers ever made. Reciprocation of these was always appreciated. He was truly one of a kind, a real character, larger than life. Firefighting, hunting, fishing, card playing were true passions. His passing is a loss. He will be missed.
