UTE, Iowa — Gorden Delbert Owens, 70, of Ute died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Omaha, Neb.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute with the Rev. Eugene Ernst officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Aaby Post 442 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5605, all of Ute. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute.

Mr. Owens was born Nov. 15, 1927, near Charter Oak, Iowa, the son of Gustav and Esther (Achelbein) Owens. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended country school and St. Paul's Lutheran School in Ute.

He served with the U.S. Army Air Defense Team during World War II and with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he worked for Henry Kunze.

He married Ruth Anderson on March 6, 1955, in Rockwell City, Iowa. He farmed in the Soldier, Iowa, area before purchasing a farm near Ute in 1962. The family moved onto the farm in 1964.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, serving in various offices. He was also a member of American Legion Aaby Post 442 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5605.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Leila and her husband, Don Kuhlmann of Charter Oak and Ramona Pithan of Ute; two sons, Paul and his wife, Colleen, of Scranton, Iowa, and Erich of Ute; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary and her husband, Jim Cunningham, of Hot Spring Village, Ark., and Dona Owens Colyer of Salix, Iowa; three brothers and their wives, Howard and Pat of Palmdale, Calif., Ray and Baru of Hot Spring Village and Robert and Lou Ann of Norfolk, Neb.; a brother-in-law, Howard Uhl of Mapleton, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Marlys Retalic of Miami, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Kurt Gustav; a granddaughter, Stephanie Owens; his parents; his stepmother, Elizabeth (Staugaard) Owens; an infant brother and sister; a sister, Bev Uhl and a brother-in-law, Edward Colyer Jr.
