Joseph P. Dunlap, Sr., 89, of Kingsley passed away on Monday, May 12, 2014 at his home. Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2014 at the Johnson - Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley. Rev. Karen Garrison will officiate. Military Honors will be conducted by Nash Post #140 of the American Legion. A private family burial will take place at a later date. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home with the family present to greet friends at 1:00 p.m.

Joseph Phillips Dunlap, Sr. was born on May 1, 1925 in Perry, Ohio to Oliver Raymond and Elizabeth Lucy (Winter) Dunlap. He graduated from high school in Ohio. Joe enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps on February 11, 1944. He was one of the last classes through the Army Air Corps as WWII ended. He served until October 29, 1945 when he earned his Honorable Discharge.

On January 28, 1950, Joseph and JoAnn Vargo were united in marriage at Lorain, Ohio. They made their home in Lake City, Ohio where Joe worked at American Raycon. They later moved to Painesville and Cleveland, Ohio. It was there that Joe joined the International Brotherhood of the Boilermakers. Joe’s job as a boilermaker took them throughout the United States. The family lived in several places including Branson, Missouri and Minot, North Dakota before settling in Onawa, Iowa. Joe assisted with the construction of the Port Neal Power Plants south of Sioux City. They lived in Onawa for over 30 years before moving to Kingsley, Iowa in 2004.

Joe and Jo-Ann participated in square dancing while living in Branson. He had his own sawmill and enjoyed woodworking. On his acreage near Onawa, Joe planted hundreds of trees and liked outdoor work. Most recently he took up weaving and spinning yarn.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Rose "Gypsy" Ball of Longview, TX, Lucille Marie Collins of Onawa, IA, Linda Louise (John) Althoff of Onawa, IA, Raymond Oliver (Teresa) Dunlap of Monticello, WI, Jean Ann (Forrest) Hall of Stillwater, OK, Carol Jean (Mike) Schweitzer of Winthrop, IA, Hope Janet Hundley of Camanche, IA and Joseph (Karen) Dunlap Jr. of Kingsley, IA; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, JoAnn on December 7, 2011; sisters, Mary (Frank) Bruening and Olive (John) Levak; brothers, David Dunlap and Lawrence (Bernice) Dunlap; and a nephew, Dave Breuning.
