MAPLETON, Iowa -- Joseph P. Flanigan, 72, of Mapleton died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, at his residence following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, with Monsignor Mark Duchaine officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496 of Mapleton. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday, with a vigil wake service at 7 p.m. followed by a rosary conducted by the Knights of Columbus, at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Joseph Patrick Flanigan was born May 14, 1931, in Sioux City, to Martin and Henrietta (Murphy) Flanigan. He was raised on a farm in Soldier Township in Crawford County, Iowa. He received his education in a rural school there and earned his General Education Diploma while in the U.S. Army. He served in the U.S. Army from February 1952 to January 1954, during the Korean War.

He was united in marriage to Nora Ann Schoenherr on Sept. 17, 1955. The couple made their home in Mapleton ever since. He did long-distance trucking for a number of years and later was co-owner of Mapleton Motors. Since 1968, he had been involved in farming, trucking and the grain business at Flanigan Brothers Elevator in Mapleton. He retired Dec. 31, 2002.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496 for 47 years and the Knights of Columbus 2839 of Danbury, Iowa, for many years. He was an avid bike rider and loved to fly his powered parachute. He especially enjoyed his children, grandchildren and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nora; a daughter, Mary Nelson and her husband, Bob of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and their children, Beth and Cory; a son, Martin J. Flanigan of Mapleton and his friend, Lynnette Lacey, her daughter, Marina and his children, Megan, Kelby, Annie and Mardi Jo; a daughter, Benita Uhl and her husband, Roger of Mapleton and their son, Chad; a daughter, Joann Treiber and her husband, Tim of Danbury and their children, Tiffany, Steffany and Karly Jo; a son, Michael Flanigan and his wife, Tammy of Mapleton and their children, Alex, Angie, Joey and Shawn; two brothers, Robert Flanigan of Sioux City, and Donald Flanigan and his wife, Darlene of Mapleton; a sister, JoAnne Seufert and her husband, Don of Ute, Iowa; and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Henrietta Flanigan.

Joseph P. Flanigan passed away on December 25, 2003, in Mapleton, Iowa, at the age of 72 years, 7 months, and 11 days.

The vigil wake service followed by the Rosary led by the Knights of Columbus was held on Sunday, December 28, 2003, at Armstrong Chapel in Mapleton. The funeral Mass was held on Monday, December 29, 2003, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton with Msgr. Mark Duchaine officiating.

Interment was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery near Mapleton.

Pallbearers were Chad Uhl, Cory Nelson, Alex Flanigan, Joey Flanigan, Beth Nelson, and Bryan Flanigan.

Honorary Pallbearers were Joe's grandchildren Beth Nelson, Cory Nelson, Megan Flanigan, Kelby Flanigan, Annie Flanigan, Mardi Jo Flanigan, Chad Uhl, Tiffany Treiber, Steffany Treiber, Karly Jo Treiber, Alex Flanigan, Angie Flanigan, Joey Flanigan, and Shawn Flanigan.

Joseph Patrick Flanigan was born on May 14, 1931, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Martin and Henrietta (Murphy) Flanigan. He was raised on alarm in Soldier Township in Crawford County. He received his education in rural school there and in G.E.D. courses while in the Army.

He served in the United States Army from February 1952 until January of 1954 during the Korean War.
He was united in marriage to Nora Ann Schoenherr on September 17, 1955. The couple has made their home in Mapleton ever since.

Joe did long distance trucking for a number of years and later was co-owner of Mapleton Motors in Mapleton. Since 1968, he has been involved in farming, trucking, and the grain business at Flanigan Brothers Elevator in Mapleton. He retired on December 31, 2002.

Joseph was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #0496 in Mapleton for 47 years, and a member of the Knights of Columbus 2839 of Danbury for many years.
