7 May 2014Richard Leroy Heistand was born august 13, 1951 to Elvin and Norma ( Nordaker) Heistand in Pisgah, Iowa. Richard was raised south of Soldier and graduated from East Monona High School in 1969. He was baptized and confirmed in the Soldier Lutheran Church. After high school Richard tried his hand at farming with his dad and decided that farming wasn't for him. Richard became an accomplished mechanic and he worked at Hutchinson's Chevrolet in Pisgah, Harris Chevrolet in Logan, Ratigan's in Missouri Valley, and Vinton Chevrolet in Blair, Nebraska. The opportunity arose for him to acquire the blacksmith shop in Woodbine where he worked until his health forced him to retire. Richard married Nancy Uherka on June 25, 1983, and couple lived in Woodbine.
Richard enjoyed riding dirt bikes, camping and fishing. He also enjoyed race cars and pulling pickups, shooting trap at the Soldier Gun Club and playing euchre and pinochle. He was quick with a joke and had a hearty laugh.
Richard died on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley, Iowa at the age of 62 years, eight months, and 16 days.
Richard was preceded in death by his father, Elvin Heistand; brother, Michael Heistand; and father and mother-in-law. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Heistand of Woodbine, Iowa; son, Chad (Colleen) Heistand of Dunlap, Iowa; daughter, Stacy (Robert) Lane of Marysville, Ohio; stepson, Lex (Stephanie) Jacobson of Battle Creek, Iowa; mother, Norma Heistand of Soldier, Iowa; five grand-children, Preston Chase and Breanna (Ryan) Cundifff all of Spencer, Iowa, Peyton Heistand of Marysville, Ohio; Gwendolyn and Cecily Jacobson of Battle Creek, Iowa; great grandson, Nicholas and several other relatives and friends.
