19 March 1998Onawa Democrat Melvin Frederick Uhl, 84, died March 3, 1998 at Onawa, Iowa.
Melvin Frederick Uhl was born February 6, 1914 at Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Fred and Emma (Harriman) Uhl. He was raised and educated in Mapleton. In June of 1940, Melvin was united in marriage to Evelyn Sherman of Hornick, Iowa. The couple farmed land near Climbing Hill, Iowa for two years before moving to a 160 acre farm near Hornick, Iowa. They remained on that farm for 37 years until their retirement in 1976. They moved to Onawa, Iowa in 1981.
Melvin was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa.
Those survivors left to cherish his memory include Evelyn, his wife of 57 years; two daughters and their husbands, Sharon and Dave Mesker of Las Vegas, NV and Glennis and Bill Schneider of Canyon Country, CA; two sons, Ronald of Sioux City, IA and Terry and his wife, Devera of Omaha, NE; 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren along with many other relatives, neighbors and good friends.
Melvin was preceded in death by a daughter, Sindea Gilbert, a grandson, John Olden, his parents, two brothers, Leonard and Orville and one sister, Ruby.
Funeral Mass was held Saturday, March 7, 1998 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa, Iowa. Rev. Alfred E. McCoy, officiated. Mrs. Darrell Hewitt, organist, Mr. David Hausman, vocalist sang "Just As I Am" and "We Remember."
Pallbearers were Kelly Munford, Roger Lloyd, Kevin Lloyd, Mark Lloyd, Rex Persinger, Mark Persinger, Rick Voss.
Interment was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Mapleton, Iowa, Rev. Edmund Tiedeman, officiating.
Armstrong Funeral Home,, Mapleton, Iowa was in charge of arrangements.Memorials may he directed in Melvin's name to the American Heart, Diabetes or Cancer Associates or St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa.
