ONAWA, Iowa -- Ronald M. Uhl, 57, of Onawa died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at DeSoto Bend National Wildlife Refuge as a result of a boating accident.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Harry D. McAlpine officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Mapleton, Iowa. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil wake service at 7 p.m., all at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Ronald Melvin Uhl was born July 8, 1946, at home, the son of Melvin and Evelyn (Sherman) Uhl of Hornick, Iowa. He graduated in 1964 from Whiting (Iowa) High School.

In 1963, he married Diana Langren of Whiting, Iowa. They moved to Sioux City. He worked for Siegs, Purina Dog Chow, Wilson Trailer and Metz Baking, where he retired after 30 years of service.

He later married Jeanie Walsted of Sioux City on Sept. 21, 1985.

He enjoyed fishing and taking fishing trips with friends and family. He especially enjoyed fishing with his kids, taking them to the park and spending time with them. He also enjoyed golfing (having had a hole in one), bowling, reading, playing cards, gardening and yard work. He did volunteer work for the elderly, helping with mowing their lawns and taking care of all outdoor yard work. He enjoyed escorting his mother and friends to church on Sundays and taking up collections there. He had a strong faith in God and belonged to St. John's Catholic Church in Onawa.

Survivors include four daughters, Teresa and her husband, Brian Chappelear of South Sioux City, Christine and her husband, Gaylen Wiig of Smith Center, Kan., and Katie and Abby Uhl, both of Raymore, Mo.; three sons, Tim, Matthew and John Uhl, all of Raymore, Mo., living with their mother, Jeanie; six grandchildren, Sarah, Keith, Brandon, Angela, Kelly and Dan; two sisters and their husbands, Sharon and Dave Mesker of Las Vegas, Nev., and Glennis and Bill Schneider of Canyon Country, Calif.; a brother and his wife, Terry and Devera Uhl of Omaha; his mother, Evelyn Uhl of Onawa; and many aunts, uncles, cousin, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Uhl; and a sister, Sindea Gilbert.
