Guyla N. Cooper, 94, of Blencoe, died Tuesday, March 11, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa.

Guyla Nadine South was born March 14, 1919, in Little Sioux, the daughter of Guy P. and Gladys M. (Conyers) South. She was raised in the Little Sioux and Blencoe areas. She attended Pickle City Country School, Mann Country School, and Blencoe High School.

Guyla and David Cooper were united in marriage on June 22, 1936, in Logan. The couple farmed and raised their family in different areas throughout Iowa and Minnesota. Guyla worked at Swanson’s in Council Bluffs and a maple sugar factory in Onamia, Minn. She also owned and operated a restaurant in Oto, and worked for the Cartmill family restaurant in Blencoe. She worked at the Blencoe School as a cook until it closed, and then worked as a cook for the West Monona School District for 17 years.

Guyla loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also loved dancing, gardening, flowers, dogs, cats, and the Blencoe book club. Many people enjoyed her delicious meals, as she was a wonderful cook. Guyla was a people person and enjoyed visiting, especially at Monday morning coffee in Blencoe.

Guyla was a member of the First Christian Church in Onawa, and the VFW Auxiliary. She was a past member of the Onawa Eagles Club.

Survivors include her children, Louis (Nisla) Cooper of Panama City, Republic of Panama, Jeannette (Donald) Kubik of Emerson, Neb., JoAnn Polly and (Bob Gosch) of Smithland, and Robert Jensen and friend (Darla) of Blencoe; grandchildren, David Cooper, Yvonne Cooper, Kirk (Grace) Kubik, Kristin (Dale) Gaither, Kraig Kubik, Ronald Polly and (Linda), Troy Polly and (Brenda), and Carrie Polly; great-grandchildren, Dustin, Mindy, Melissa, Nicole, Luigi, Eric, Phillip (Rachel), Ashley (Kurt), Andrew, Grant, Gabriel, Destiny, Kraig Jr., Nick, Kamie, Brittany, Ronda, Jessica, Megan, Ryan Lynn, and Blake; great-great-grandchildren, Sophia, Jackson, Taylor, Nolan, Kaden, Cecilia, Kincaid, Korbin, Alice, Kolton, Nikia, Alexis, Brody, and Paxton; sisters and brother, Anita Weeks of Tampa, Fla., Phyllis Hamm of Denver, Colo., Ken (Nancy) South of Sioux City, and Beverly Risdal of Missouri Valley; two sisters-in-law, Aloha South of Onawa, and JoAnn South of Spokane, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; infant daughter, Donna Kaye Cooper; infant grandson, Klark Kubik; great-grandson, Rad Schrank; brothers and sisters, John South, Marietta Johnson, Florence Riley, Flora South, Roger South, Dennis South, and infant sister, Virginia South.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 14, at the First Christian Church in Onawa with Pastor John Sears officiating. Music selections were “In The Garden” – solo, “The Old Rugged Cross” – solo, “When I Get Where I’m Going” – recorded selection, and “Rock of Ages” – congregational/recessional with Kenneth South as soloist and Ann Phillips as organist. Burial was in the Little Sioux Cemetery, Little Sioux.

Visitation was 5-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 13, at the Rush Family Chapel, Onawa. Arrangements were under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa.

Casket Bearers were Kirk Kubik, Ronnie Polly, Troy Polly, Guy Dean Coleman, Erick Kubik, and Mike Kennedy. Honorary Bearers were Guyla’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
