Family and friends remember Dorothy Smith

Dorothy E. Smith, 82, of Mapleton passed away Friday, March 23, 2007, in Sioux City, Iowa.

Services were Tuesday, March 27 at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton with Pastor Fred Pilecki officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon. Marie Whiteing was the organist for the service and Richard Weekly was the soloist. Music included "In the Garden" and "God Be With You." A prayer service was Monday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Dorothy Elizabeth Smith was born Sept. 2, 1924, at Anthon, the daughter of Phirman Ray and Rachel Cecelia (Burow) Downing. She attended school at Anthon. In 1942 she married Daniel Deeds and had a daughter, Cecelia. In 1946 she married Charles "Chuck" Smith and had a second daughter, Lydia. They moved to California in 1955. Dorothy then worked at International Motel and See's Candy Factory in San Francisco and IMAC-Division of Varians Electronics in San Carlos, Calif. They moved back to Mapleton in 1974 where she worked at Valley Craft until the present. Charles died June 15, 1986.

She was a member of American Legion Loren Hollister Unit 496 of Mapleton and VFW Little Sioux Valley Unit 9124 of Oto. Dorothy was a gifted quilt maker having made many quilts along with crocheting many afghans.

Survivors include her two daughters, Cecelia (Tootie) Bumstead and her husband, Jerry, of Mapleton and Lydia Allen of Cave Junction, Ore.; four grandchildren, Laurie Weekly and her husband, Richard, of Glenwood, Iowa, Dorey Meyer and her husband, Mark, of Onawa, Jodi Ehlers and her husband, Chris, of Mapleton and Amanda Allen of Cave Junction; 10 great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Matthew Weekly, Alex, Riley, Adam and Avery Ehlers, Courtney and Rachel Meyer, Jennifer Dayhoff and Shelby Allen; a brother, Charles "Chub" Downing of Anthon; and a sister, Mary Ellen Abbott of Mount View, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Phirman and Rachel Downing; her husband, Charles W. Smith; three sisters, Gladys Ryan, Rachel Berniece Kroll and Betty J. Berning; and a son-in-law, Gary Allen.

Pallbearers were Richard Weekly, Matthew Weekly, Mark Meyer, Alex Ehlers, Chris Ehlers and Mike Berning.
